Free Excel Compatible Spreadsheets and Spreadsheet Viewers
Sometimes corrupt Excel files will open in other spreadsheets or spreadsheet viewers. In addition to Open Office, please see other free Office Suites on my page devoted to that. There should be 3 more. For the viewers, it's a long process, but the software should allow copying cells, which can then be pasted into a new spreadsheet in Excel proper.

Comment - Also try the free Personal Version of the Columbus Viewer. Be sure to try to view it by right clicking on the file and choosing "view," rather than double clicking on the file as this will simply open the normal application associated with the file rather than the Columbus Native Viewer.
