CHK File IdentifiersAlthough CHK file identification can be labor intensive and involve some Windows expertise, the freeware here is of high quality. There seems to me little reason to turn to commercial solutions for this sort of problem unless you don't have the time or are worried about your computer skills. Name - CHKDSK Download URL - http://trcdatarecovery.com/ Developer - Microsoft OS - Win2k onwards File Size - 421.42 KB Developer Provided Description - "CHKDSK is a utility within Microsoft Windows operating systems (Win2k onwards) designed to check for file system and hard disk errors with the ultimate aim of preserving the life of a hard disk drive. Chkdsk evolved from a utility called Scandisk, the only difference being that ChkDsk supports NTFS volumes whereas Scandisk was FAT only. Its primary aim is to find and repair corrupt or damaged file system data, it also has the ability if manually selected to do so, to check for hard disk integrity issues such as bad sectors." Comments - None Yet Name - Unchk and Filechk UNCHK FILECHK Download URL - UNCHK and FILECHK Developer - Eric Phelps (Uncheck) and Martin Kratz (filecheck) OS - Windows File Size - 10 KB (filecheck), 39 KB (uncheck) Supported Software Versions or File Systems - Most Windows Versions from 3.1 to 2000 ( FAT12/16/32/NTFS) Developer Provided Description - "So what is a CHK file? Well, any time a program or Windows crashes, any files that were open are not closed properly. Part of closing is writing all the file location information in all the right places. Without this info, Windows can't find all the parts of the file. When SCANDISK or CHKDISK is run, all the parts are identified as "lost file fragments" and converted (if you want) into CHK files. Face it. Stuff crashes all the time. If you only run SCANDISK once a month, you get a month's worth of old crash junk. If you were working on (and lost) something important just before a crash, you might want to try to recover any data from any CHK files that exist. On the other hand, if you aren't in a state of panic over lost data, just delete any CHK files. A handy tip: Keep your disk defragmented. That way if you ever do lose it all, the lost file fragments will be more likely to be complete files. Important: Save yourself some trouble. The CHK file recovery programs offered here do not "recover" files. They simply rename them to have the correct extension! If you already know the extension of the file(s) you want to get back, just rename all your CHK files to the desired extension and see what works. The programs here only help you when you have way too many CHK files to test or when you have way too many different file extensions you want to recover." Comment - Unchk works fine, I couldn't get FILECHK to work. Then again I didn't really try on genuine CHK files. Name - Chk Mate Download URL - Download Here Developer - DIY Data Recovery OS - Windows ME/2000/XP File Size - 1 MB Supported Software Versions or File Systems - Most Windows Versions from 3.1 to 2000 ( FAT12/16/32/NTFS) Developer Provided Description - "CHK-Mate will examine the contents of the CHK files and determine if the contents are known filetypes, such as MS-Word files or GIF files. When contents are recognized (for example, as a Word document), the CHK files are copied to a new file with the correct file extension (Filexxxx.CHK -> Filexxxx.DOC). The new file extension allows you to easily open the file using the associated program." Comment - Note: Password for Setup program: CM-SUL-130103-CMRZ.
